A research paper on conversational agents by Shuken Sugita has been published in the IPSJ Journal of Information Processing.
This study investigated how the expression of nonverbal information through facial changes during an agent’s listening behavior affects the perceived intelligence of the agent. A dialogue experiment was conducted using an agent that implemented gaze aversion at turn-taking moments. The results showed that this behavior significantly increased participants’ evaluations that the agent was a good listener and that it understood the conversation before responding.
